What makes me an Extremist ? or should the question be what makes me a “Islamist, terrorist and fundamentalist?  Questions that we have to ask our self quite frequently now a days. According to the Free Dictionary by Farlex the definition of  an Islamist is.

1. An Islamic revivalist movement, often characterized by moral conservatism, literalism, and the attempt to implement Islamic values in all spheres of life or
2. (Islam) supporting or advocating Islamic fundamentalism
I hope now the picture becomes clear, according to that definition it does not matter how and moderate you are or how loud your about Islam. The moment you believe in all fundamental you become an Islamist. What are Islam’s foundation and what are the fundamental beliefs in Islam
Islam is build on five pillars, as mentioned in the hadeeth narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar in which Prophet said

the son of Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:

‘I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say, “Islam has been built on five [pillars]: testifying that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing the salah (prayer), paying the zakat (obligatory charity), making the hajj (pilgrimage) to the House, and fasting in Ramadhan.”’

Reference: 40 Hadith Nawawi 3
English translation : Hadith 3
So by attempting to obey Allah(  سبحانه و تعالى   ) and his Prophet ( ) you become an Islamist. Does praying, paying obligatory charity, fasting during Ramadan and performing pilgrimage really make you extreme ?. This subsequently means that we have 1.7 billion Islamist,  and we are define by that we do not have any ramifications.
It is all about the terminology, said a wise man once. We are aware of the art of depicting  and coining words. We must refuse to use or accept these terms.

David Cameron and his new Task force remind us of the Team B task force during the cold war, in a sense that unnecessary situations could be created by accident or calculated.

We published  an articles last year  ” it’s Learn to admit, not learn to Identify ”  Former MI5 general director list symptoms of Extremist 1.0, where Dame Stella Rimington made the outrageous claim being able to identify Muslim extremist by the traits an individual conspicuously showcases. The former director of MI5 called the people to inform neighborhood watches if they suspect extremist behavior. Her logical formula of identifying extremist start to become a substantial matter. David Cameron and Downing Street responded upon the Lee Rigby incident, and positioned themselves in an almost apologetic positions. The leverage the media had over the last past ten years of producing inflammatory articles caused the tension in the first place. The media and government policies served the purpose of being negative messengers, and polluting peoples mind with fear and hatred on both side of the table.

stella-rimington_2057308i( Stella Rimington)

Just to refresh our minds, Dame Stella Rmington specific guideline on how to identify extremist included: A sudden ostentatious insistence on religious ritual, especially in a secular context (demands for prayer rooms where no other religion has them); a withdrawal from social interaction with women and a disapproval of feminine dress. There may be a sudden obsession with physical fitness, more via Outward Bound activities than team games. Someone may adopt traditional Arab dress or abruptly abandon it (so as not to attract attention). They might forbid or avoid music, collect jihadi material, withdraw from contact with non-Muslims or Muslims who are not extremist; there may be single-issue conversation, vociferous hatred of the West and Israel, and perhaps attempted travel to troubled regions or misleading vagueness as to where they’ve been.

happy muslim ( All we see is extreme happiness)

Our Prophet ( ) took great pains to convince the public thinking and the deniers of the message, and was specially considerable and gentle with Jews and Christians. Pride and self-satisfaction was the reason for them for not accepting the truth. It was never issue of lack of convincing arguments and proofs. Our noble Prophet ( ) was informed by Allah    سبحانه و تعالى    that it will not change their way of thinking towards the message so what makes us think that it would be change with us. To label yourself and call yourself a socialist, capitalist, communist, humanist, liberal or moderate will not change the fact  as long as you abandon Islam holistically. Although all of the positives in these ideologies are found in Islam anyway.

This correlate with what the Noble Qur’an tells us

And never will the Jews or the Christians approve of you until you follow their religion. Say, “Indeed, the guidance of Allah is the [only] guidance.” If you were to follow their desires after what has come to you of knowledge, you would have against Allah no protector or helper. ( 2:120)

What is the Islamic perspective on extremism  regarding religious matters?

Islam stresses moderation in all aspect of life. it takes deep interest in the spiritual as well as the material well- being of man. It commands its followers to prepare themselves  for the Hereafter while at the same time lawfully enjoying their portion of life as  long as they do not trangress the limits set by Allah(  سبحانه و تعالى   ) the noble Quran tells us

But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters.” (28:77)

This verse encourages Muslim to be balanced and just. One of the best advise we can take regarding this topic is from the best person that walked on the face of the earth the Prophet ( )

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said:
“The Messenger of Allah said: ‘Indeed, this religion is easy, and no one will ever overburden himself in religion, except that it will overcome him. So seek what is appropriate, and come as close as you can, and receive the glad tidings (that you will be rewarded), and take it easy; and gain strength by worshipping in the mornings, afternoons, and during the last hours of the nights.'” (Sahih)
Reference : Sunan an-Nasa’i 5034
In-book reference : Book 47, Hadith 50
English translation: Vol. 6, Book 47, Hadith 503
So someone who takes the religion to the next level and actually becomes extreme will overcome themselves according to the Prophet ( )
After all how do we make sure that we Muslim protect our self from these wild accusation. A brilliant initiative took yesterday place in Manchester.  “Is Islam being Criminalized”  was an event that focused on the Response to the UK Govt report “Tackling Extremism in the UK”. Guest Speaker from across the country attended such as, Sheikh Sulaiman Ghani,Dr Reda Pankhurst (Hizb ut-Tahrir),Sheikh Haitham al Haddad, Abdullah al Andulusi (Muslim debate initiative) and Moazzem Begg (Cage Prisoners). Is unity finally coming ?
